CHAPTER 13
Waiting for the police to arrive was torture. Lucy and I had held a hurried conference in the hallway before weâd headed back downstairs. We agreed that we couldnât say anything to anyone about what had happened to Anthea, particularly not details such as the knitting needle sticking out of her back.
When we came back down to the breakfast table, everyone stopped eating and drinking and turned to look at us. It was as though our terrible news went before us. And one look at our faces must have confirmed that something bad had happened.
It was Maggie Cooper again who said, âFor heavenâs sake, whatâs wrong? The pair of you look like youâve seen a ghost.â
I stuck to the script that Lucy and I had frantically agreed on. âIâve called an ambulance, but I think they might be too late. Antheaâs cold and sheâs not breathing.â
There were sounds of shock and horror around the table. Maggie said, âBut I must go up to her. I learned CPR years ago. I think itâs three breaths in andâ¦no, wait a minute, one breath in and so many chest presses. Oh dear.â She put a hand to her head.
Then Elliot stood up. âI had to take CPR for a mountaineering course. Iâll go.â
He came towards us, and I put a hand up. âThereâs nothing you can do, Elliot. Sheâs definitely dead.â
He jerked back as though the hand Iâd placed against his chest was an electric fence. He looked at me, and I could imagine him in charge of a team of mountaineers on a tricky climb. âAre you absolutely sure?â
âI am. There can be no doubt. I think she died sometime in the night.â
He nodded and went back to his seat and sat down. He picked up his cup of coffee, put it back down, reached for water and drained his water glass. No one knew what to say.
Rosalind said, âI canât believe it. A heart attack, do you think?â She turned to Maggie, and for once, the two rivals seemed like friends who could rely on each other.
Maggie made a face of disbelief. âBut she was so young. And so healthy. That vegan diet. Everything so pure.â
Gravely, Nigel Hargreaves said, âIâm not quite sure thatâs true.â Every eye turned to stare at him. He colored slightly under the gray tinge of his skin. âIâm not one to speak ill of the dead, but I can tell you for a fact that many of her claims were untrue.â
âPardon?â Sunita said.
âIâm a keen gardener, you see, and from the Lake District myself. I can tell you that she couldnât possibly be growing all the plants and herbs she claims to be growing in the Lake District. The climate simply wonât support it.â
Issy said, âBut couldnât there be like, I donât know, a microclimate? I mean, my mother grows roses in an enclosed spot beside stone walls, which she calls a sun trap.â
He looked a little sheepish. âIâve studied her supposed farm. Itâs not a sun trap.
