CHAPTER 13

Waiting for the police to arrive was torture. Lucy and I had held a hurried conference in the hallway before we’d headed back downstairs. We agreed that we couldn’t say anything to anyone about what had happened to Anthea, particularly not details such as the knitting needle sticking out of her back.

When we came back down to the breakfast table, everyone stopped eating and drinking and turned to look at us. It was as though our terrible news went before us. And one look at our faces must have confirmed that something bad had happened.

It was Maggie Cooper again who said, “For heaven’s sake, what’s wrong? The pair of you look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

I stuck to the script that Lucy and I had frantically agreed on. “I’ve called an ambulance, but I think they might be too late. Anthea’s cold and she’s not breathing.”

There were sounds of shock and horror around the table. Maggie said, “But I must go up to her. I learned CPR years ago. I think it’s three breaths in and…no, wait a minute, one breath in and so many chest presses. Oh dear.” She put a hand to her head.

Then Elliot stood up. “I had to take CPR for a mountaineering course. I’ll go.”

He came towards us, and I put a hand up. “There’s nothing you can do, Elliot. She’s definitely dead.”

He jerked back as though the hand I’d placed against his chest was an electric fence. He looked at me, and I could imagine him in charge of a team of mountaineers on a tricky climb. “Are you absolutely sure?”

“I am. There can be no doubt. I think she died sometime in the night.”

He nodded and went back to his seat and sat down. He picked up his cup of coffee, put it back down, reached for water and drained his water glass. No one knew what to say.

Rosalind said, “I can’t believe it. A heart attack, do you think?” She turned to Maggie, and for once, the two rivals seemed like friends who could rely on each other.

Maggie made a face of disbelief. “But she was so young. And so healthy. That vegan diet. Everything so pure.”

Gravely, Nigel Hargreaves said, “I’m not quite sure that’s true.” Every eye turned to stare at him. He colored slightly under the gray tinge of his skin. “I’m not one to speak ill of the dead, but I can tell you for a fact that many of her claims were untrue.”

“Pardon?” Sunita said.

“I’m a keen gardener, you see, and from the Lake District myself. I can tell you that she couldn’t possibly be growing all the plants and herbs she claims to be growing in the Lake District. The climate simply won’t support it.”

Issy said, “But couldn’t there be like, I don’t know, a microclimate? I mean, my mother grows roses in an enclosed spot beside stone walls, which she calls a sun trap.”

He looked a little sheepish. “I’ve studied her supposed farm. It’s not a sun trap.
